So with this poster I wanted to have a man whose face had turned to crystal. With the help of some Photoshop filters I was able to figure out how to make a face out of polygons, creating a cubist effect. I’m afraid that stylistically it doesn’t fit in with the other posters, but I don’t care that much.

This episode is pretty notorious for momentarily derailing the Alternate Universe story that was being developed. To an extent episode 2.02 is about Olivia dealing with her return from the other side, and to an extent the scientist’s attempts to save his son’s life mirrored Walter and Peter, but for the most part it’s just a forgettable stand alone episode. I chose to give Night of Desirable Objects a Night of the Living Dead vibe, with the Mole Baby digging around underground, waiting to shove his hand out and claim a victim.

I’ll be making posters a lot more regularly now that summer has started.

The premiere of a season has to set the mood and story for the rest of the year, and that’s what I want to capture in this poster. Olivia is at the center of this show, and therefore her journey is at the center of each season. In the first season she is introduced to the world of fringe science, as evidenced by her time in the sensory deprivation tank. In the second season she is introduced to the secret war between the universes, as evidenced by her attempted assassination and brief visit to that universe. I wanted to try making the most realistic face that I could, which is much better than the face I tried to make at the beginning of Season 1.

It’s sort of surreal to have actually finished a whole season’s worth of posters for Fringe. I had a lot of rough patches when I didn’t think I’d actually see this through, but consistent positive feedback and excitement from total strangers encouraged me to keep challenging myself instead of quitting, and I’m really excited to get going on Season 2, so expect that to begin in the next few days. But I really wanted to write this as a thank you to everyone who has consistently supported my art, or supported at all. Thank you. Fringe really has the best fans (no offense whovians).

This is it. The Season 1 finale.

The title alone, “There’s More Than One of Everything” is so provocative and I wanted the poster to match. Sure, the twin towers could have done that, or Jones attempting to cross into the alternate universe, but I settled on the silent image of Peter’s grave. To me this was probably one of the most shocking revelations in the entire show and ended up becoming one of the most central story details. I had to depict it on one of the posters. I also paid more attention to how the typography functioned as a part of the design. I’d like to continue that in future posters.

I had a real problem figuring out how to make this poster. I didn’t want to focus on the Cortexiphan kids since this is the introduction of something much more important: the alternate universe. The best image of the alternate universe from this episode would have to be the destruction of Boston. I wanted Olivia to be present in some way and chose to use a mirror image to show her in the two universes. And of course the alternate universe has that tremor effect that we always experience when we go over there. Add a grungy texture and you’ve got a chaotic poster for a chaotic episode. That hair was obnoxious to do though.

The Season 1 Finale comes tomorrow!

Thematically this episode revisits Walter’s guilt and desire for redemption, but not as well as other episodes. Really this is a glorified “monster of the week” episode and I figured I’d focus on that. I wanted to make a poster that was “scary”. I thought of emphasizing Valerie’s “vampire” features, and decided her mouth was the best thing to focus on. I wanted to make a poster of her eyes but it didn’t seem emblematic of the episode enough.

This poster was surprisingly challenging. I made and trashed four totally different designs before settling on this final poster. I was convinced that I should focus on Nick Lane’s attempted suicide, or the black and gray “uniform”, but none of the designs were very impactful. For some reason it wasn’t until one in the morning that I realized the image of a 3-year-old Olivia sitting in a charred room would work perfectly. Attempting to create the burned wall and the television lines gave me something new to try. Plus, I can probably recycle the stuff I scrapped for future posters.

I always thought this episode was the best exploration into Walter’s character in Season 1. Guilt and the limits of science are both huge themes for Walter throughout the series and the episode uses the chimera to embody them. Walter and the Chimera coming face to face had to be the focus of the poster. I’ve also been slowly integrating textures into these. They add some nice depth.

For me the most intriguing aspect of this episode was the implied connection between the child and the Observer. I wanted a poster that captured the moment between the two, and took some artistic liberties in how I represented it. I also wanted to try a poster that allowed the text to fade into the background. I might play with that more later.

The introduction of Cortexiphan and Olivia’s connection to it. This episode had a nice symbol for that discovery: the test box. I’m a big fan of really simple, meaningful images, and the image of the box casting a long shadow just seemed right. This poster was a lot more geometric than I’m used to, so that was a welcome change for me.

One of my favorite story lines in the first season of Fringe was Olivia returning to John Scott’s memories. This episode is the end of that arc. On the one hand “The Transformation” is about genetic modification, but that only serves the larger story of investigating who John Scott really is, and ultimately Olivia being able to forgive John and herself for loving him. Their reunion/goodbye is one of the most important moments of Olivia’s development in Season 1.

Well, I’m back to the Fringe poster project. The January season started and I felt the excitement coming back.

As for this poster specifically, the episode didn’t offer much. There’s the subplot about Walter being forgiven for Carla Warren’s death seventeen years earlier, but it didn’t seem to be the appropriate part of the episode to focus on. Instead I used this as an opportunity to play with a collage background, constructed with frames of the actual lethal video. Then I created the imaginary hand from negative space.

Not too much to say for this poster. The whole episode is defined by the mystery of what ZFT wants with Olivia, so I wanted that atmosphere to be the real focus of the poster. I was also excited by the idea of creating shadows behind transparent plastic. I’m happy enough with the end product. That’s really what I love about this project. I get to try something new every day, and if I’m having trouble with a concept it’s ok, because I can apply what I have learned another day.
