FRINGE SEASON 1 - Recap
It’s sort of surreal to have actually finished a whole season’s worth of posters for Fringe. I had a lot of rough patches when I didn’t think I’d actually see this through, but consistent positive feedback and excitement from total strangers encouraged me to keep challenging myself instead of quitting, and I’m really excited to get going on Season 2, so expect that to...

FRINGE POSER 120 - There’s More Than One of...
This is it. The Season 1 finale. The title alone, “There’s More Than One of Everything” is so provocative and I wanted the poster to match. Sure, the twin towers could have done that, or Jones attempting to cross into the alternate universe, but I settled on the silent image of Peter’s grave. To me this was probably one of the most shocking revelations in the entire show and ended up becoming...

FRINGE POSTER 119 - The Road Not Taken
I had a real problem figuring out how to make this poster. I didn’t want to focus on the Cortexiphan kids since this is the introduction of something much more important: the alternate universe. The best image of the alternate universe from this episode would have to be the destruction of Boston. I wanted Olivia to be present in some way and chose to use a mirror image to show her in the two...

FRINGE POSTER 118 - Midnight
Thematically this episode revisits Walter’s guilt and desire for redemption, but not as well as other episodes. Really this is a glorified “monster of the week” episode and I figured I’d focus on that. I wanted to make a poster that was “scary”. I thought of emphasizing Valerie’s “vampire” features, and decided her mouth was the best thing to focus on. I wanted to make a poster...

FRINGE POSTER 117 - Bad Dreams
This poster was surprisingly challenging. I made and trashed four totally different designs before settling on this final poster. I was convinced that I should focus on Nick Lane’s attempted suicide, or the black and gray “uniform”, but none of the designs were very impactful. For some reason it wasn’t until one in the morning that I realized the image of a 3-year-old...

FRINGE POSTER 116 - Unleashed
I always thought this episode was the best exploration into Walter’s character in Season 1. Guilt and the limits of science are both huge themes for Walter throughout the series and the episode uses the chimera to embody them. Walter and the Chimera coming face to face had to be the focus of the poster. I’ve also been slowly integrating textures into these. They add some nice depth.

FRINGE POSTER 115 - Inner Child
For me the most intriguing aspect of this episode was the implied connection between the child and the Observer. I wanted a poster that captured the moment between the two, and took some artistic liberties in how I represented it. I also wanted to try a poster that allowed the text to fade into the background. I might play with that more later.

FRINGE POSTER 114 - Ability
The introduction of Cortexiphan and Olivia’s connection to it. This episode had a nice symbol for that discovery: the test box. I’m a big fan of really simple, meaningful images, and the image of the box casting a long shadow just seemed right. This poster was a lot more geometric than I’m used to, so that was a welcome change for me.

FRINGE POSTER 113 - The Transformation
One of my favorite story lines in the first season of Fringe was Olivia returning to John Scott’s memories. This episode is the end of that arc. On the one hand “The Transformation” is about genetic modification, but that only serves the larger story of investigating who John Scott really is, and ultimately Olivia being able to forgive John and herself for loving him. Their...

The Future of My Tumblr?
I realized that, as much as I love light blue, using the color as my background does a disservice to the work I post. From now on I’m using a much more minimalist theme with a plain white background, so that all the focus is drawn to the individual pieces.  My bemused yellow face icon is also gone. I might work it in somehow. Or just create a whole new logo. Adios! -David Ryan Andersson

FRINGE POSTER 112 - The No-Brainer
Well, I’m back to the Fringe poster project. The January season started and I felt the excitement coming back. As for this poster specifically, the episode didn’t offer much. There’s the subplot about Walter being forgiven for Carla Warren’s death seventeen years earlier, but it didn’t seem to be the appropriate part of the episode to focus on. Instead I used this as...

FRINGE POSTER 111 - Bound
Not too much to say for this poster. The whole episode is defined by the mystery of what ZFT wants with Olivia, so I wanted that atmosphere to be the real focus of the poster. I was also excited by the idea of creating shadows behind transparent plastic. I’m happy enough with the end product. That’s really what I love about this project. I get to try something new every day, and if...

FRINGE POSTER 110 - Safe
I chose to focus on the Negative Matter ring for this poster. That and the good old blue lens flares that seem to show up less and less. This marks a departure from the more 2-dimensional style I’ve been working in. And the scene has so many colors that I couldn’t pick a primary one to work with. I’ve been much more monochromatic until now. It’s exciting to see that...

FRINGE POSTER 109 - The Dreamscape
This might be the most fun I’ve had with one of these posters. I knew from the beginning that the image of the butterfly swarm would allow me to do something interesting. I try to give each poster a main color, which usually makes them monochromatic. For this poster I wanted the yellow of the butterflies to be what stood out, which led me to create a pattern out of them above poor Mark...

FRINGE POSTER 108 - The Equation
All right, this is my first poster since recovering. I’m officially starting up my poster-a-day project again. The Equation gave me some trouble, possibly more than any of the others. The episode has lots of possible motifs and images to use as inspiration, but I kept coming back to the lights. The Green-Green-Green-Red sequence seemed important because it’s the aspect of the episode...

DELAY
Sorry to people who are following my Fringe-Poster-A-Day project. I’ve been extremely sick the past few days and any free time of mine has been spent sleeping, forcing down pills, or laying in bed, exhausted, wide awake, and sweating uncontrollably. Aside from the fact that I haven’t had time to make sweet, sweet posters, being sick is also just awful.  -David Ryan Andersson

FRINGE POSTER 107 - In Which We Meet Mr. Jones
This episode is, of course, the one in which we first meet Mr. Jones, Agent Loeb, and ZFT as an organization. I really love the moments between Olivia and Jones, and that was what I decided to focus on here. The handcuffs serve as a way to show the link between the two characters’ fates. It also just plays off a police/prisoner dynamic, which Jones manages to turn on its head as he shows...

FRINGE POSTER 106 - The Cure
The prologue for this episode remains one of my favorite in Fringe history. There’s already something that makes gas masks and hazmat suits haunting, and seeing two anonymous figures in them, dropping a drugged girl in the middle of the street really drove home that these “Pattern” people are literally using the world as their laboratory. As I designed the poster I knew I wanted...

FRINGE POSTER 105 - Power Hungry
To be honest, this wasn’t one of the most memorable episodes of Fringe, and I had some trouble deciding how to represent it. I thought that Joseph’s electromagnetic field could be an interesting visual, and allowed me to design a less conventional image for the poster. For me, this is where a lot of the fun of this project comes from, forcing myself to constantly create and experiment.

FRINGE POSTER 104 - The Arrival
The first episode to draw attention to the Observer. Ironically, despite the fact that the Observer promises answers, this episode probably has the most unanswered questions of all. What is the beacon? Who is John Mosely? Is he a “rogue” observer? How did he get technology from “over there”? What is his connection to Walter’s father? I wanted this poster to...

FRINGE POSTER 103 - The Ghost Network
One thing that really hooked me on this episode was how well the writers were able to make such bizarre and seemingly unrelated events all come together with a pretty novel sci-fi explanation. I also appreciated that the show, early on, was aware of its mysteries and made sure to call back to earlier episodes. I vaguely reference the decomposing victims from the Pilot in Roy’s visions.
